Chapter Eleven
By the time I got home, I was exhausted, and there was no way I was making dinner. I stopped by the local chicken place and picked up a bucket of fried chicken. Alec and I didnât eat out at fast food places often, but it was warranted today. I wasnât sure how, but the day had gotten away from me as Sarah and I ran errands and took care of business. Sarah and Thad had opted to go out to eat. I knew Alec would be too tired to go out, so fried chicken it was.
The house lights were off when I got home, so I knew Alec hadnât been home yet. I brought our dinner into the kitchen and set it on the counter. The smell of fried chicken brought my black cat, Dixie, on the run.
âMeow?â
I turned and looked at him. âI knew youâd come running as soon as you smelled this chicken.â I bent down and ran my hand over his head. Dixie had been with me for years now, and he was getting up there in age. But it didnât matter, he still thought he was a kitten. At least, most days, he did. âI bet youâd like a taste, wouldnât you?â
Dixie purred loudly, and I pet him again. There was no way he wasnât going to get a bite of chicken tonight. I straightened up and went to the sink to wash my hands just as the front door opened and closed. âIn here!â
In a moment, Alec showed up at the kitchen door, sniffing the air. âI donât know what that is, but it sure smells good.â
I turned and smiled. âFried chicken. Iâm afraid itâs not homemade fried chicken. I picked it up on my way home. I am beat, and I just couldnât face cooking something tonight.â
Alec crossed the kitchen floor and kissed me. âYouâre not going to get any complaints from me. It smells terrific.â
I grinned. âI think thereâs some leftover strawberry supreme cake in the refrigerator, too.â
âReally? Thereâs some left over? Whatâs wrong with me? I should have polished that off late last night before I went to bed.â
I nodded. âIâm beginning to wonder about you.â I went to the cupboard and got plates out. âSo, whatâs new with you?â What Cynthia had said to me had been wearing on my mind all day. I did not want to work in a restaurant. I liked the flexibility of being able to do my baking when I felt like it. If I wanted to stay up late at night, I baked. If I wanted to get up early in the morning, I baked. If I felt like it in the middle of the day, I baked. There was no way I could follow someone elseâs schedule.
âWell, the interim chief has arrived.â
I turned and looked at him. âAnd? And why didnât you tell me about him? Cynthia Hoffer had to tell me, and I didnât know a thing about it.â
He smiled. âIâm so tired, it slipped my mind, and you were asleep last night when I remembered.
